Making a monochromatic fashion statement

Style of single colored outfits emerges among teens because of celebrity influence.

Monochrome styling has recently become fashionable, with many high end magazines featuring photos of models wearing different shades of one color.

According to the style blog, stylishly me, the word “monochromatic” breaks down into two pieces: “mono” meaning single and “chromatic” meaning color. Basically, taking one color and using different shades to create the look.

Cold weather brings changes in fashion. Monochromatic style works well with layering (see separate article on this page for information about layering). It isn’t as simple as wearing grey pants and a grey shirt. Instead, imagine different shades of grey, from charcoal to dove colors.

When dressing monochromatically, adding jewelry is a common way to make a monochromatic look more interesting. Many people like to add necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings, and some even like to add multiple of the same jewelry type.

“I like to layer multi colored gold jewelry together using white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. I feel like it helps mix it up,” said Cameron Bender, a math teacher.

The monochrome trend has been around since the early 2000’s but began gaining more popularity in the last few years. Kendall Jenner, a model and public influencer, has been setting an example for the monochrome trend for over two years. In 2017, Angelo Pennetta, a photographer for Vogue, captured Jenner wearing a yellow themed outfit. In the picture, she wears a yellow collared button up under an off-white blazer jacket.

This trend has also recently been featured on the social media pages of popular influencers like Emma Chamberlain. In multiple of her Instagram posts, Chamberlain pairs different off-white colored pieces together.

“To me, it doesn’t matter if the outfit is 100 percent the same color. I like throwing in a bit of white or a neutral color,” Casper Mcghee, a freshman.

Like Jenner, wearing different shades of the same color allows people to achieve the monochrome effect without being overbearing.

Although this trend is flexible when it comes to wearing multiple colors, some colors are harder to style while still trying to keep the look interesting.

“I don’t really like when people do dark green with this trend, but I typically see people trying to do black or brown,” says Sophie D’alieso, a freshman.

Dressing monochromatically is certainly in the category of bolder fashion trends. Even though it means dressing all one color, it gives the individual freedom to experiment with shades, textures, and layers. This trend may seem limiting, but depending on what color and how people choose to accessorize, there are countless possibilities.
